Angelic Bakehouse, in Cudahy, has shut down operations as of March 12, 2024.

Angelic Bakehouse in Cudahy has shut down.

The wholesale bakery's announcement of the closure came via a post on the company’s official Facebook page to its 17,000+ followers on March 13.

T. Marzetti Company acquired Angelic Bakehouse, 3275 E. Layton Ave., in November 2016 “to complement our existing dough business,” according to Alysa Spittle, director of communications for T. Marzetti.

“Unfortunately, the products have not met our financial expectations,” she said.

The last day of production for Angelic products was March 12.

“Once we have worked through our existing inventory and fulfilled our commitments to retailers, the Angelic brand will no longer be sold in stores,” Spittle said.

The closure will affect 40 local employees. T. Marzetti has offered opportunities for some employees to relocate and work at another facility.

“For those unable or uninterested in remaining with the company, we are providing financial assistance and outplacement services to ease the transition,” Spittle said.

As for the building, Spittle said it will be sold once all closure activities are completed.

Angelic Bakehouse prided itself on non-GMO ingredients and products that are both vegan and kosher.

For those who find some of Angelic’s products in stores, they can be safely frozen for up to six months, according to the company website. Otherwise, fresh breads, buns and wraps will last up to 14 days while thin and crispy pizza crusts last six months due to airtight packaging.

T. Marzetti, in addition to the Marzetti brand, also owns New York Bakery, Caesar Cardini’s Chatham Village, Girard’s, Reames, Inn Maid, Amish Kitchens, Romanoff Caviar and Sister Schubert’s.

The company also has brand licenses with Chick-fil-a, Buffalo Wild Wings, Olive Garden, Arby’s, Subway, Texas Roadhouse and Bibibop to sell consumer products.
